HISTORY AND WHO BENEFITS

From Golf to Cross Country, Volleyball, Basketball, Curling, Badminton, Rugby, Soccer and Track - for young men and women, we want to help reduce the expenses of the various school sports teams so that any youth can participate in the athletic programs in the Bow Valley.  Currently, schools that have participate in subsidized funding from our tournament for their athletic programs include Canmore Collegiate High School, Banff Community High School and Lawrence Grassi Middle School, and we welcome Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Academy in 2011!

Every youth should have the opportunity to gain the benefits associated with being an active participant in team sports. Over $356,000.00 has been raised since our tournaments began in 2005!

Academic Scholarships: The Gary Anderson Golf Tournament "FORE KIDS" has established funding to provide Academic Scholarships yearly to the Top Male and Females Athletes from Canmore Collegiate and Banff Community High Schools for post secondary education. Scholarships are awarded in 2011 to: CCHS Male Athlete of the Year, Eric Praught, CCHS Female Athlete of the Year, Emily Harris.  BCHS Athletes of the Year:  Matthew Soukas and Cordell Kuzemka.  Each top athlete has received a $500.00 Academic Scholarship.

"Challenge Day" Educational Training
Canmore Collegiate High School on January 15, 2009, along with faculty from Banff Community High School.  Visit www.challengeday.org more for information on how this program positively affects our youth.  Challenge Day unfortunately is unable to be held in 2010, but it hopes to continue in 2011.

Search Institute, Minneapolis, Minnesota  states 40 Developmental Assets that are building blocks of healthy development that help young people grow up to be heathly, caring, and responsible. The average young person only experiences 18 of the 40 assets. We can significantly increase assets for our youth to achieve, through athletics. Some key ones are as follows:

*Young person spends three or more hours per week in sports at school
*Youth to receive support from three or more nonparent adults (ie athletic coaches)
*Both parents and teachers (teachers are their coaches) encourage the young person to do well
*Young person reports that "my life has a purpose"
*Young person is optimistic about his or her personal future
*Young person seeks to resolve conflict nonviolently
*Young person's best friends model responsible behavior
*Young person perceives that adults in the community value youth
These are just some of the benefits to youth. If we invest in our youth, we all reap the rewards.
"A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove...but the world may be a different because I was important in the life of a child"

Partnership with KidSport, Bow Valley Chapter

Picture
The Gary Anderson Golf Tournament FORE Kids is partnering with KidSport in the Bow Valley to help spread the word about the positive impact that KidSport is now making in our valley.  KidSport helps remove the barriers to children playing organized sports by offering up to $500 per child (by application) to pay for the registration fees associated with organized sports.   The main goal of the Gary Anderson Golf Tournament FORE Kids is to help significantly reduce the overall costs of organized sports within a school setting, and KidSport helps individual children get funding to pay the registration fees for participation in those sports.  Our mutual goal is to get more kids playing organized sports and our efforts compliment each others programs!  See their website for more information and ways to support their program: http://www.kidsport.ab.ca/index.php?page=bowvalley_home
